Get a category B driving license
A category B driving license entitles you to drive vehicles with a total weight of up to 3.5 t, including those with a light trailer, quad bikes, and agricultural tractors. Check out the descriptions of all categories. (website in Polish)
Who can obtain a category B driving license in Poland?
A driving license can be obtained by anyone who has lived in Poland for at least 185 days and:
- wants to get a driving license for the first time – if they are of the right age,
- already has a driving license and wants to get the next category – if they are of the right age.
How to prepare?
- driving license application – open file in new window (website in Polish) – download and fill it out at home or do it at the office,
- medical certificate,
- current photo. Check out what your driving license photo should look like. (website in Polish),
- ID card or passport. If you are a foreigner, take your passport or residence card, a document that confirms your registered address, such as an ID card, residence card or a certificate of permanent or temporary residence. If you have a new ID card that does not have a registered address – take a certificate of registration from any commune office. If you do not have a registration – ask the official what to do,
- a copy of your current driving license – if you already have a driving license and want to get a permit for the next category,
- written consent from your parents or legal guardian – if you are about to turn 18. Go to the office with your parent or legal guardian – they must sign a document in front of the official, in which they agree to start the course and issue a driving license,
- a psychological opinion stating that there are no psychological contraindications to driving a vehicle – if you want to get a driving license in the following categories: C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D, D+E KA or when the starost has referred you for psychological tests.
What do you need to do?
Since 2014, a new procedure for obtaining a driving license has been in force. First, you will receive a PKK (Driver Candidate Profile) number from the communication department of your office. This is a unique number for each candidate driver. Thanks to it, the driving school and the traffic center will be able to find you in the system. Below you will find the steps of the new procedure.
- Go to a doctor who performs driver examinations. You can contact the driving school where you want to do the course – they probably cooperate with such a doctor. The doctor will perform the examination and decide whether you are fit to drive. If you are fit – you will get a medical certificate.
- Prepare all the necessary documents. Details can be found in the section What do you need to prepare?.
- Submit them to the appropriate office. Details can be found in the section Where do you apply?.
- Get your PKK number. Details can be found in the section Where and when to collect your PKK number?
- Take the course and pass the exam. You have 2 options.
- Sign up for a theoretical and practical driving school course. Check what to do.
- Go to a driving school and sign up for a course. Take your PKK number with you.
- Take a theoretical course and then a practical one.
- Sign up for a theory test at the Provincial Road Traffic Centre (WORD). Take your PKK number with you.
- If you pass the theoretical exam, sign up for the practical exam at WORD.
- Prepare for the theory exam yourself and take part in the practical course only. Check what to do.
- Sign up for a theory test at the Provincial Road Traffic Centre (WORD). Take your PKK number with you.
- If you pass your theory test at WORD – go to a driving school and sign up for a practical course. Take your PKK number with you.
- Take a practical course.
- Sign up for a theoretical and practical driving school course. Check what to do.
- If you pass the practical exam, WORD will send information about it to your office.
- Pay for the issuance of a driving license. Details can be found in the section How much will you pay?
- If you pay at the cashier, take the payment confirmation to the room where your application was accepted. If you make a transfer, send an email with the transfer confirmation to the office.
- Get your driver’s license ready. Details can be found in the How long will you wait section.
When do you submit your documents?
You can submit documents at any time.
Where do you submit your documents?
You submit your documents:
- at the district office in your place of residence,
- at the city hall – if you live in a city with district rights,
- at the district office – if you live in Warsaw.
Where and when do you collect your PPK number?
You have 2 options for collection: at the office or if you send the application by post – you will also receive the PKK number by post.
You will get the PKK number:
-
- immediately – if your application is complete,
- within 2 days – if the office needs to check your data,
- within a month – if the office needs to clarify your situation, for example you have a negative medical report,
- within 2 months – if your situation requires additional explanations.
How much will you pay?
You will pay PLN 100.00 for issuing a driving license.
Check with the office how you can pay. You usually have 2 options:
- you pay at the office cash desk,
- you make a transfer to the office account.
How long will you wait?
- within 9 working days from the day the office receives confirmation of payment, your driving license will be ready for collection,
- up to a month – if the office needs to clarify your situation, for example, you are banned from driving or it turns out that you have a driving license abroad,
- up to 2 months – exceptionally, if the situation requires additional explanations.
You have 2 pickup options:
- at the office – take your ID card or passport and driving license with you – if you have one,
- by post – if you select collection by post on your application, you will enter your address and send your driving licence back before collection.
Check the website www.info-car.pl (website in Polish), at what stage is your case and when can you collect your ready driving license. All you need to do is provide your details: PESEL number, name and surname.
If an official refuses to issue you a driving license, you can appeal to the local government appeal board. You have 14 days from the date of receipt of the decision to do so. File an appeal with the office that issued the refusal.
